Head of Keyboard Noise Reduction

Role Summary

The Head of Keyboard Noise Reduction is responsible for identifying, mitigating, and strategically eliminating excessive keyboard noise across the organization. This role ensures a calm, focused, and acoustically civilized working environment while balancing productivity, ergonomics, and employee morale.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a company-wide keyboard noise reduction strategy
• Identify high-risk clacking zones, including open offices, shared spaces, and video calls
• Evaluate keyboards, switches, and typing techniques for noise output
• Recommend hardware solutions (silent keyboards, dampeners, desk mats, etc.)
• Establish best practices for quiet typing without shaming enthusiastic typists
• Mediate disputes between “heavy typers” and “highly irritated coworkers”
• Collaborate with IT and HR on noise-related policies and accommodations
• Monitor ongoing noise levels and continuously optimize reduction efforts
• Provide training, guidance, or gentle interventions as needed

Required Qualifications

• Proven experience in noise management, office optimization, or conflict resolution
• Deep understanding of mechanical vs. membrane keyboards and their acoustic profiles
• Exceptional diplomacy skills and emotional intelligence
• Ability to remain calm under sustained clacking pressure
• Strong observational skills and attention to detail
• Comfort delivering difficult feedback like, “Have you considered typing… softer?”

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in open-plan offices
• Familiarity with keyboard switches (Cherry MX, low-profile, silent variants, etc.)
• Background in acoustics, ergonomics, or workplace psychology
• Personal history of being driven slightly insane by loud keyboards
